Please understand first and foremost that my school district provides many resources needed in public education. However, as a Kindergarten Teacher, my needs are far different than any other grade. Trying to explain that I need bath mats, squeeze toys, and a mini trampoline… well, they may not realize how important these things are and these items certainly don’t fall under the category of ‘technology’ or ‘standardized objectives’. Children have their whole academic life to sit in a chair at a desk, so why am I spending countless hours arranging seating charts when I could be creating fun and amazing hands-on learning stations? Inspired by Mr. Greg and Kindergarten Smorgasboard, I chose bath mats and lunch trays to define personal work space and laundry baskets for storage. Students will experience the freedom of choosing where to sit, whether they want to sit alone or with a friend, and taking ownership of their choices daily. Learning the procedures of using our mats and trays will create opportunities to be responsible, patient, and flexible. I also chose a variety of sensory tools and storage baskets to model, practice, and help students cope with overwhelming emotions and redirect themselves in a time frame based on individual needs. I know and believe as an educator with an Early Childhood Degree, the positive effects all of these things can have in my classroom. If funded, my summer will be well spent planning, arranging, and problem-solving a new environment. Thank you for reading and considering donating to my project. I appreciate your support!
