I believe it is essential that students be given every opportunity to learn about cultures that may be different than their own, and to be provided with books in the class that celebrate their own culture, ethnicity, gender, and differences as well. My goal is to build a classroom library that promotes tolerance, love and empathy of others. People are not all the same shape, color, or size, and I don't want my classroom library to be either. I also truly want to foster a love of reading and learning in my students, no matter what walk of life they come from. Having books with characters from various nationalities, backgrounds, and abilities will allow many of my students to connect to reading in a more powerful way. It is important to me that my students can see themselves in the stories they are reading, and for students to learn about other people they may meet throughout life. I believe building a classroom library full of books celebrating diversity will help my students become loving citizens of the world. I am asking for twenty-eight books including Refugee and The Elephant Thief. Please help me with my goal to honor diversity. You will be making a difference in my student's lives, futures, and the future of others. Together we can make the world a more tolerant and loving place.
