At our school, we have students of all different math levels. Many come to us having not learned basic fractions, decimals, and percentages, while others have passed honors Algebra in their previous schools. My classroom provides a hands-on Montessori-inspired high school leveled-learning experience where every student is assessed and placed on a spectrum from basic elementary math all the way up through Calculus. Students are taught short lessons in small groups and encouraged to use all resources, including the above manipulatives and along with their peers to learn and master mathematical concepts. Mastery in our competency-based classroom is demonstrated through frequent projects that allow students to investigate a real-world problem, use math to formulate a solution, and present to the class. The games, rulers, flash cards and other materials will serve as indispensable tools for generations of students to come and will make learning math easier, more fun, and more engaging.
