My students are resilient, caring, quirky middle schoolers! They are also fighters and survivors. Most of them come to me from traumatic pasts, challenges, and emotions that are hard to leave in the hallway. Over 90% qualify for free lunch, and for most, school is the place they feel at home. That is exactly what I want my classroom to provide. Almost 70% of the children come from a Latino background, and many have immigrated to the U.S. from other countries with hopes of finding more opportunities for their families. Many of my kids are working hard to learn English as a second language while Spanish is spoken at home. With parents working long shifts in agriculture or food processing plants, my students often must stay home to take care of their siblings. Many of them find it hard to see life beyond the fields. With your much-needed and truly appreciated support, they will see the opportunity for brighter futures.
