I am slowly building a classroom library for my juniors and seniors so they can be exposed to a wider variety of literature. Many of my students live in poverty and deal with issues of homelessness, substance abuse, and domestic violence. They are not in a position to go to the bookstore to buy a book, or even to the public library to check out a book because they are working to put food on their table, pay the rent, take care of younger siblings, etc. I would like them to have the chance to use literature as a little escape from their everyday lives. Research shows that independent reading is one of the most successful ways to build a student's vocabulary, as well as build empathy in them as people. Unfortunately, these students are very often the students who do not have the drive or opportunity to read for pleasure.
