This well-built and long-lasting pergola will mark a significant improvement to our current school garden project as the students need a shady area in which to cook and prepare our delicious, freshly harvested foods. One of our main visions for the school garden is to incorporate healthy eating, and studies show that kids are more likely to try a new vegetable if they've grown it themselves. We already have a donated sun oven, cooking materials, raised beds, drip irrigation, picnic tables, and will be installing an outdoor sink in a few weeks. The last element of an outdoor seating area is a shade cover. The motto of Cloverdale is, "where the vineyards meet the redwoods" and we would be growing donated grape vines in wine barrels at each corner of the pergola. Our kids will love the fantastical element of dappled shade with growing vines as it stirs the human and nature connection of feeling immersed, protected, and nourished. Many of our students have difficult home lives, and creating a special place where they get to mindfully prepare and eat their healthy salads, soups, and stir-fry dishes from the fruits of their own labor will bring the garden program full circle. Creating loops, connections, and sensory memories in the garden will surely last a lifetime and inspire kids to grow their own food at home and pick out vegetables from the grocery store. All students will be able to use this area for not only cooking, but also studying outside, read-alouds, art, science experiments, and any other project that would bring the students outside into a shady and imaginative area. We will also be starting to host an after-school gardening enrichment class in which our "Pergola Perfection" area will be most ideal for gathering, learning, and creating. Thank you!
