Individuals on the autism spectrum often have challenges with sensory processing. That means that the students in my classroom are impacted in their ability to respond to information that comes in through their senses: sight, touch, sound, smell and taste. Studies conducted by therapists have proven that play and interaction in a sensory space can change how the brain reacts to sensory stimulation, thus improving daily functioning for individuals on the autism spectrum. I have chosen objects that stimulate the senses, such as a light cube, a bubble tube, a sensory crash pad, and various other materials, to create a sensory space within my classroom. My students will have the option to spend time each day in the sensory space to help them calm, focus and self-regulate. The objects chosen will allow them to have access to sensory stimulation when they need it.
