Teaching growth mindset strategies and ideals will help my students respond positively to new concepts and willingly accept and face challenges. First grade is a year of great academic growth, but can sometimes be overwhelming for my students. Students need to be encouraged to develop the stamina and perseverance necessary to learn and master the demands of our curriculum, while also developing a positive attitude toward solving problems they encounter. Having a growth mindset is essential to lifelong success, and it is something that students can develop with practice. The picture books in this project will help to encourage a growth mindset through engaging, purposeful read-alouds. The mindset materials offer stories that students can relate to and show students how positivity, creativity, stamina, and perseverance can help solve problems and accomplish goals. Last school year, I introduced the concept of fostering a growth mindset to my class, and my students were very excited and motivated to apply what they learned from our discussions to their work in the classroom. The use of hands-on materials in STEM bins during stations will also help to foster and strengthen students' growth mindset as they use the materials to solve a variety of tasks. STEM Bins are plastic school boxes filled with an engineering manipulative such as Legos, pattern blocks, base ten blocks, unifix cubes, toothpicks and playdough, or popsicle sticks with velcro on the ends. The boxes also contain small sets of task cards on metal rings that picture a variety of basic engineering structures. Students will be engaged in creative, complex tasks and are encouraged to think like inventors. Kinesthetic learners, spatial learners, and logical learners will love exploring the different possibilities for the building materials as they try to construct more challenging structures.
