For this project, I have requested a Sensory Swing Frame and a Carpeted Platform Swing that will both be “big ticket items” to start our sensory room! Special education students have a variety of needs which include, but are not limited to, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and sensory stimulation. Having a place in our school that these therapists and teachers can work with children will increase the likelihood of them succeeding academically and behaviorally. Up to 95% of children with autism have sensory processing challenges. (Tomchek & Dunn, 2007) Opportunities for movement have been shown through research to enhance, or even be a necessity for learning. (Madan & Singhal, 2012; Ratey, 2013) This project will help get a Sensory Room at our district and help us move in the right direction!
