Fifth graders are at the stage in their scholastic journey, where they will begin to read assigned novels. The goal for assigning a novel, is for the students to not only recall parts of the story, such as events and themes, but to also analyze the characters, use critical thinking skills, and to apply and relate the lessons within the novel to everyday life. Fifth grade is a crucial time, when scholars reach the age of feeling socially awkward, and pressured to fit in. I chose the book, Loser, written by award winning author, Jerry Spinelli, because the novel is age appropriate, and sends the overall message that, being yourself, just as you are, is okay. Scholars will not only be able to identify with this story personally, but will also realize that they must respect the individuality of their peers as well.
