On any given day in our ELA classroom, students reflect on their learning, draft and revise their writing, research and create team multimedia projects, and engage in whole-class Socratic seminars to deepen their learning. The diversity of tasks requires a multitude of structures to ensure that all students are engaged and able to participate. Although the students are often creative in their solutions, such as maneuvering chairs around the tight corridors of the classroom and taping chart paper to blank areas of our bulletin boards, adding functional furniture that provides interactive workspace on a daily basis will help students stay focused on their tasks. Creating modern, flexible, and interactive learning spaces that can change to fit the needs of all students at any time will help foster authentic learning in the classroom and maximize instructional time in a way that traditional classroom structures do not always allow. The classroom environment should mirror and aid the important work within its walls, and easy-to-move collaboration tables with dry-erase space for planning and thinking will become a seamless tool in allowing students to meet a variety of challenges.
