For the past two years, in order to increase the amount of student-focused, student-driven instruction in my class, I have been setting aside a weekly period of time for my students to explore and learn about topics of their own choice and interests. (This is commonly known as Genius Hour.) Each student spends several weeks researching their topic before creating and sharing a product, and their newfound knowledge, with the rest of the class. In addition to the high level of interest and excitement my students show for Genius Hour, I have also seen major gains in reading and comprehension, research and note-taking abilities, and presentation and questioning skills. As these skills and abilities have developed, so have the creativity and complexity of my students' culmination products. Their final projects have included narrated slide presentations, video-taped presentations, and student-written and acted skits. Unfortunately, the sound quality on these presentations, when recorded via open-air, leaves a lot to be desired, and it truly detracts from the students' hard work and the information they are conveying to their classmates. By using lapel microphones while recording their products, this sound issue will be solved by allowing my students' voices to be heard clearly.
