My classroom has a varied student population. 50% of the students are English language learners and many have not had any exposure to books before entering kindergarten. 5 of my students started school this year without speaking a word of English. Considering I only speak English, we have had many obstacles to overcome. I need to immerse them in literacy activities and give them as much exposure to books as possible. Listening to books help them to learn how to turn the pages, matching pictures to what is happening in the story and to point along to the words as they read. We also used the listening center to listen to sight word songs. I would like the letter and sounds listening activity for those lower level students who need a little extra help.
