After spending the summer, writing social-emotional learning curricula for Boston Public Schools, I have become more invested than ever in incorporating mindfulness strategies into my teaching practice. I've long found benefits from short mid-class meditations and yoga enrichment. This year, I am going to lead our school's first-ever Mindfulness Club. The club will meet twice each week after school in my classroom and will teach the basics of yoga and meditation. I hope to totally transform my classroom space each time the club meets. Through the incorporation of sound therapy via the Tibetan singing bowl, aromatherapy through the essential oil diffuser and the soft light offered by the lamps, I hope to bring my students out of "school mode" and into "meditation mode." Middle school is a stressful time for students. My hope is that this club will give them a little respite while providing them with skills they can use throughout their lifetimes.
