As a first-time Special Education teacher, I have plenty of fun and creative ideas; but working at a Title I school, I lack many of the funds necessary to bring these ideas to life. I have set out with one mission: to put the "fun" in creating a functional special education classroom, complete with a sensory corner. The capstone piece for the sensory corner will be a calm-down teepee. Many of my students experience various sensory impairments. When they are overstimulated, they often need a calming space; this is where the teepee comes in. The sensory corner will also feature fidgets, sensory boxes and other go-to sensory items to aid my students with their sensory issues. Also, I am creating an art therapy area where students can express themselves & work on fundamentals. For many of my students, we have set goals which include reinforcing the fundamentals; these fundamentals include handwriting, reading, math, as well as strengthening their motor skills. Our related services personnel are spread so thin, that I want to be able to reinforce their exercises in the resource room, but in a fun a creative way!
