Reading is arguably the most important skill elementary students learn in school. It unlocks the entire world for them for life! That's why early reading is called "decoding"—they are literally breaking a code and discovering a whole world of meaning! In a Montessori classroom, many materials are literacy based. In order to access the content of these rich cultural materials, children need to develop independent reading skills. In order to build these skills, we make reading a central part of our school day. We do daily Read Alouds with thoughtfully chosen books to spark discussion and introduce skills. We also hold small group reading lessons geared toward specific reading levels. What we don't currently have in our classroom is a leveled book library where children can practice reading books of their specific reading level when they are not in a lesson. Reading a book that's "just the right fit" ensures that children are experiencing enough repetition of the same sounds and spelling patterns in order to gain fluency at that level. When the level becomes comfortable, they are ready for the next challenge. With a classroom leveled library, children will be able to read books of their level on their own and make daily progress toward their reading goals.
