Sadly, for some of my students, reading is a dreaded part of the day. The goal of my project is to gain high interest reading material that will get kids excited about reading! I have experience using Scholastic's SCOPE magazine while teaching 6th grade and my students LOVED receiving their new issue each month. The topics are varied and relevant to their "kid" world and also the real world around them. The connections that we can make and write about within these Scholastic News articles are HUGE and will help students grow academically and as world citizens. Incoming 5th grade students come with varying reading skills and abilities. It can be very challenging to meet their individual needs. Scholastic News magazines provides teachers with the tools to differentiate instruction. The online component is also very engaging for students including videos that give them the inside scoop on the research that went into writing the articles they read and background knowledge needed. Each subscription also include a Spanish copy which can be used with ELL learners. I have seen the impact these magazines have on student engagement and achievement and hope to repeat that with my new group of diverse 5th graders!
