After nine years of teaching, last year I moved to a historic elementary school with classrooms that are reminiscent of stereotypical, early 20th century schools. The classrooms are very small and house individual student desks and a teacher desk. Opportunities for collaboration are difficult due to the desks and small space. Having tables would create more space and allow for 21st century learning to occur more easily. Research shows, students that discuss what they learn have higher retention rates than students who do not. My students thrive from communicating with one another; be it, problem solving, reteaching, or basic conversation. Providing them with tables to work at will precipitate open communication.
