In just a few weeks, a new group of sixth graders will be entering my virtual classroom. And to be honest, I don't know my students yet. I have made my phone calls home and asked about what went well in the spring and what challenges emerged in remote learning. I don't know all their faces, and it will probably take me a little longer than normal to figure out what makes them tick as we gather together on Zoom. What I do know, however, is that my students want to find joy; their families want them to succeed and to experience some resemblance of normal school. At a time when urban public schools are already underfunded, COVID and remote learning have amplified the disparities that exist for most of my students. And in spite of those limits placed on such demographics, my students and their families are resilient and determined to get the education they deserve.
