The supplies and games I am requesting for my students will encourage engagement and fun while working on underlying skills. In OT we find ways to work on multiple skills at once, all while playing fun games and activities! Often times we will add a gross motor component to a game, such as using a scooter board or crawling to get pieces needed, using tweezers or tongs to get items. We will also have our students in certain positions to improve crossing midline, shoulder stability, and core strength. The Handee band, pop beads, and Theraputty will help increase strength in the students' upper bodies, core and in the muscles of their hands and work on bilateral coordination. The balance beam will be used in so many different ways! Students can use it the traditional way or be asked to walk backwards, hold an object on a spoon or with tweezers while walking across, pick items up while balancing, etc. There are unlimited options! The Lite-Brite and Suspend will work on visual perception and fine motor skills. When playing Suspend ,I will have the students use tweezers to pick up the pieces as an added challenge. Mental Blox is a great activity to increase visual perceptual skills and stacking. I plan to also incorporate a memory piece to it, by having the students look at the card, memorize it, and then build it from memory. I am so excited for the Maze Racers game; this game will be great for bilateral hand use and eye tracking. I plan to build mazes and take pictures for the students to copy, as this will improve visual perceptual skills. All of these items will be additional ways we can work at achieving their goals in fun ways to help the be successful in the classroom.
