This project seeks to align my fifth-grade social studies curriculum with a variety of children's books featuring diverse characters and perspectives. I know that allowing my fifth-grade students the opportunity to see themselves in book characters, and exposing them to unique perspectives simultaneously is really important. I worked hard to find literature that provided characters as mirrors to see themselves, as well as windows to see into others' experiences. This engaging literature will connect them with authentic experiences in our nation's history, all the way from learning about Indigenous people up to the beginning of the United States. Through this addition to my social studies materials, my students will be better prepared to respond critically to questions about the curriculum. They will be able to comprehend the events in history more clearly with this additional perspective into these events.
