First grade readers come to school ready and eager to learn how to read! They are curious, excited students who cannot wait to take on new challenges. First grade readers are expected to attain the most reading growth of all the grade levels and come to school with diverse literacy experiences. With the addition of new books to our classroom library, students will have greater choice in the books they read. A substantial amount of time in first grade is spent independent and partner reading. A larger selection of books increases the likelihood of student engagement during independent reading time. The more productive independent reading time allows students to make the growth expected in first grade. Our current classroom library is deprived of titles that are interesting and engaging. Numerous books are outdated and lack interesting plot lines. Newer texts will enhance my students' literacy experiences and allow them to increase the volume of books they read and deepen the conversations they have in partnerships.
