Xylophones can teach students so much in so many ways. Visually it helps to teach how melodies move, or how pitch goes up and down. For kinesthetic learners, the percussive nature of the instrument allows students to feel the beat, and participate in keeping it steady. They can also follow students as they become more sophisticated musicians, as in the older grades you can use them to read music, and learn simple to complex songs. The abilities of these instruments make them ideal for teaching concepts of music as well as ensemble skills. They are truly an instrument you can use to great effect in each grade. You can also transfer these instruments from the classroom to the concert hall as these instruments really bring something unique to a winter concert or recital. There are many resources for teaching techniques as well, so as a teacher I would feel supported by rich curriculum that has been tied and tested.
