Our goal is to get 18 scooters to incorporate into our PE curriculum. Teaching students how to ride a two-wheeled scooter will have many benefits for our school and our community. Our main focus will be to encourage students to scoot smart and scoot safe by following the basic safety rules. These safety rules will not only benefit the students with the scooters, but will also apply to bikes and trikes as well. Each class will learn the importance of wearing a safety helmet (which will be provided). They will also learn about traffic safety and the importance of riding on the sidewalk and avoiding roads. While riding the scooters, the students will learn how to stop and maneuver around different obstacles in the gym. Students will also have the opportunity to design their own scooter course. COVID-19 has also presented many challenges with physical distancing. This activity can be done safely indoors and outdoors with physical distancing and the scooters can be easily sanitized in between uses.
