Our school population is considered to be economically disadvantaged with over 66% on the free or reduced school lunch program. Our test scores are very good and our kids work very hard. However, we continually struggle to be able to afford the basics. I want to have enough copies of this novel, "Frindle", so that every child in the 5th grade can have one in their hand. Supplementing the curriculum by using novels is a great way to motivate students to read. This one novel can provide opportunities for me to teach multiple skills. I can teach dictionary skills, thesaurus skills, synonyms, genres, and many more skills just using this one book. I feel this book would be a fun way to start the school year and hopefully inspire kids to keep reading!!!! My experience is that by the 5th grade often students do not read as much as they should. I want them to love reading and I want to expose them to great kid friendly authors.
