After our school's leadership team analyzed multiple sources of data, a need to increase students’ reading achievement was identified. Guided reading is a researched-based, instructional approach that involves the teacher working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviors and can all read similar levels of texts. Our school will be implementing guided reading with fidelity a minimum of three days a week. This will help teachers effectively teach, monitor, problem solve, and analyze students’ reading through the use of individual running records. The foundation for reading begins in Kindergarten. As a kindergarten team we have committed to maximizing instructional time by providing students with an assortment of materials and resources in order to meet the needs of all students in an engaging and supportive environment. Students will learn how to read through word work attack strategies such as vocabulary practice, leveled readers, beginning, middle, and ending sound manipulation, syllable counting, sound sorting, and switching sounds to make new words. These skills will transfer directly into written expression, yet another skill that proves to be so important early on. With these foundational skills, students will build a confidence and love of reading and writing that will carry with them for the rest of their lives. With your support of our projects, our entire kindergarten team will be able to reach students in our classes for years to come. Don't just think of it as helping one class, one teacher, or 25 students. The potential of this project is to reach hundreds! Please consider supporting the other kindergarten teachers from our school by finding and donating to their individual classroom projects for guided reading as well. You can search for Mrs. Lambert, Mrs. Dillard, Mrs. Shover, Ms. Faircloth, and Mrs. Turner.
