My students are brilliant, motivated, and kind. They want to make the world a better place, and they understand that begins with education. However, some of my students attended elementary schools that did not do them justice. My students attend school in the urban core of a large metropolitan area in Missouri, where many public schools are failing to properly educate students to a staggering degree. I teach in a college preparatory charter middle school, with a school day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., summer school, and Saturday school. The idea is that Fifth grade students who are coming in our doors an average of about two years behind grade level need extra time to catch up. So that is exactly what we provide. In addition to the longer school day, students do homework EVERY NIGHT, are expected to call their teachers if they have questions, and are expected to work with their parents, teachers, and community to ensure their academic success. We work hard, and we work smart.
