Over the last dozen years or so, I have learned a great deal about motivating young people to read and write for sustained periods of time. One motivation that I find works especially well for my middle school students is offering a variety of comfortable seating options. While those outside of the teaching profession may think that comfortable would cause a student to become tired or less productive, those of us in the classroom know the opposite to be true. Allowing for a comfortable workspace increases student focus, decreases distracting behaviors, and typically brings out the best in our kids. Offering a couch to sit on, or a cozy corner with a few patio chairs, can bring an otherwise unmotivated student to life! Of course, there are times when a table or desk is more conducive to learning. During some activities, students even prefer to circle up on a rug with clipboards on their laps. It's all about the work at hand on any given day. Each year, as students spill into my room on our first day of class, the "oohs" and "ahhs" are heard. They immediately notice the sectional couch, bouncy chairs, and bean bag furniture all set within the warm and welcoming setting of my room. Unfortunately, our sofa and a number of chairs that have served me well, are no longer in the state they were many years ago. With your help, I will be able to continue offering my learners some wonderfully comfortable options for years to come!
