My students are largely visual learners who have difficulty understanding verbally spoken language. Applications on the iPad including videos, books, and games use visual information which my students have an easier time processing. My students have more success when tasks are presented in this fashion. There are various speech therapy apps created by wonderful speech-language pathologists which target the students’ IEP goals. I have also seen the iPad be an effective behavior management tool and a powerful reinforcer to earn at the end of a session. In addition, some of my students use their own iPads or dedicated Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) to communicate. Having a parallel device to be able to model appropriate use and converse back and forth with these students is vital to their learning.
