My students spend 2 hours each day reading, because we know that "the more we read, the more we grow", as our school chant goes. Our 6th grade library has become out of shape; many books are old or worn out from vigorous reading. Students approach me and say, "I can't find a book that I like," and part of this reason is that they can't relate to the books. Over 90% of my students identify as African American or Latino and the majority of books in our library do not represent their lives or identities. I hope to not only restock our library with NEW books, but restock the library with culturally relevant books in which my students can make better connections. All of the books in my cart are written by authors of color and/or feature characters of color. The plot lines or poetry in the books better match the experiences of my students.
