I want to replace traditional student desks with modern tables to allow students to work more comfortably and productively in cooperative groups. The articles and research that I have been reading about students working together have shown many positive advantages to impact and increase student learning. Communication skills develop and strengthen. While interacting with others give students more confidence in their abilities and decisions. Working together allows students to learn from one another. The ability to understand subject matter often increases as students share their ideas and thinking. Most importantly, I want each student to feel that they belong to our classroom family! At almost any family gathering you will see a group of people sitting around a kitchen or picnic table talking and laughing. I want to bring that into the classroom. I believe that the use of tables will also create a more inviting space to work while allowing me a better opportunity to monitor student learning and successes. Aesthetically, my students desks are showing wear and tear of the students that have used them over many years. The laminate tops have lost their shine and become stained and scratched. New tables would add such a nice,clean,fresh look to our classroom.
