I am blessed with a large classroom to serve my amazing kids. My goal is to take a large section of my classroom and make it into a sensory/calm down area. Kids with sensory processing issues have trouble filtering, organizing and interpreting information taken in by the senses. This can cause extreme reactions to sensations like bright light, noises, smells, tastes and textures. I would love a large classroom rug on which I would place a large bean bag style chair for students to sink into when they feel the need to self regulate; a sensory table I can fill with beans, rice, and water beads so the students can dig their hands in and feel the different textures; a rocking hammock that will allow students to rock calmly back and forth; a light box for therapeutic light stimulation and fidget toys for the busy hands. Having a place in my classroom with easy access will help serve my students and reach their individual needs.
