For the past two years, their classroom teacher has incorporated a comprehensive literacy program based on the research done on Literacy Instruction for Students with Significant Disabilities by Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver. Silent and shared reading time is a central component of this literacy program. This amazing group of scholars frequently visit our school library with their teacher and classroom support staff. They love to read and also write their own books! We have held author readings in the library for the scholars to showcase their writing and reading skills. Currently, my library has limited resources for these scholars.
They would benefit from being able to self-select books in the library that match their reading level, unique needs, and interests. Self-selected reading allows scholars with disabilities to build fluency and develop a love for reading. I am requesting several books to add to the library collection that will offer these scholars the ability to succeed in reading and writing. The requested books would also benefit our English as a New Language Learners and our struggling and reluctant readers.
