My mission as an educator is to get children to fall in love with books and reading. I've spent the last few years curating a classroom library that is filled with interesting, modern literature that will appeal to young people. One of the challenges I face is keeping my classroom library up to date - that means new books and replacing lost books. I've spent a lot of time and money doing this because I believe having high quality literature in the hands of my students is the best way to grow readers! I look at literature as a window and a mirror. We look out the "window" and gain exposure to new ideas. Through text we are shown history, places, ethical questions, cultures, truths about humanity, and political/religious worldviews. We look into the "mirror" and see our own lives and self-concepts, but also the reflection of the author's life - feelings, thoughts, mindset, and struggles. Through reading we become better people and more informed citizens. This is why I love my job!
