Over the last three seasons, our program has experienced a shift. Previously, our player's financial and ethnic backgrounds have not been representative of our school's diverse population, but this is changing. Our program is more racially diverse than ever and about a third of our athletes were eligible to have their athletic fee waived or decreased.
Players from strong financial backgrounds have opportunities to play AAU and have access to resources that will help them improve while over half of our athletes are missing out on these opportunities during the quarantine. I am hoping to keep my athletes connected while they are forced to stay home by writing individual workouts, creating weekly challenges, and by leading by example.
About half of the players in our program have a basketball at home that they can use to participate in our challenges. I want to ensure that all players have the opportunity to participate by providing a basketball to those who do not have one. This small resource will allow them to stay connected with their teammates, improve their skills, and stay active (but isolated) during the quarantine.
