In today's world, students learn best through the use of visual aids and modeling. Prior to COVID, we were able to sit close together to model lessons, share classroom items, and spend every school day face-to-face. However, now we must social distance and even teach through virtual platforms from our home classrooms. This means it is more difficult for my students to see me model lessons with manipulatives and real world materials. For the majority of last year, my students were completely virtual and did not have their own materials to utilize during lessons. This year I want to get actual pencils in their hands to write. I want them to explore with counters and base ten blocks. I will have them use magnifying glasses to investigate plants and rocks. A document camera will allow me to model and show my students the writing process, how to use their manipulatives properly, and the proper steps to using our science equipment. Since we can not share items, or may not even have them available during virtual times, I need to show them these ways through a live visual aid such as a document camera. Students learn better when educators can explain and SHOW what they need to do in order to be successful with their work.
