Young children are curious by nature. These materials will help guide that curiosity. My students will be able to explore by building and experimenting. By using different types of blocks my students will be able to see how different shapes fit together. They will be able to explore what shapes are best for making different parts of structures. By using magnets my students can experiment with force and cause and effect. My students will be able to make 3 dimensional structures using the magnet tiles. The "Cams and Cranks" and "Engineering and Design" sets will help students see how changing the way pieces are put together will change the function of the end product. The Community Helper blocks, Around Town blocks and animal magnets will encourage students to act out real life situations. They will also be able to use these materials to interact with block structures built using the magnet blocks and the foam blocks and shapes. The "IQ Challenge Set" will encourage my students to use problem solving and reasoning skills. The STEM Classroom Bundle will help during lessons on magnets, force and motion, simple machines, and objects that float or sink. Each set can be used for group instruction and student guided exploration.
All of these materials will help students learn life skills like working with a group to complete a task, learning through trial and error, and working until an objective is met. They will also learn to take risks and learn from misunderstandings. The openness of these materials will also let my students find new and interesting ways to use them. These materials also help develop small motor control. In the end when the structures are built, the discoveries made, and the experiments documented students will have a sense of accomplishment.
