The socio economic status of some of the students in our school does not allow them to experience many things in their home life. I once heard it said by author Mason Cooley that, "Reading gives us some place to go when we must stay where we are." This is true for many students in my class. By exposing students to the gift of reading, I hope to awaken them to experiences they may not otherwise get to experience. It is for this reason that I would like a grade level set of "Nine Ten, A Story about September 11th." In this story, students get to understand how the lives of 4 children from very different backgrounds change abruptly on September 11, 2001.
I hope that these books allow my students to fall in love with reading. I used the book "There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom" five years ago when I taught fifth grade. After finishing this book, one student said, "That seriously was the best book I have ever read!" All of the other students nodded in agreement. This story allows students to understand the topic of bullying and why they act the way they do. In the end, students will fall in love with the bully, Bradley Chalkers. The copies I previously used have fallen apart and I would love to get a new set to use with my students.
