Reading is the cornerstone to understanding historical events. Historical fiction novels like Homegoing are engaging ways to teach and learn about such events. This particular novel comes with close reading questions that are leveled for students do dig deeper into understanding the characters historical context. This story covers the capture of a young girl in West Africa and follows her blood line to modern day. We can use this story to cover a wide range of content for the entire year. I plan on using this novel as an engaging opener to my units and a thread to string the year worth of content together.
