My students come into my class with little prior knowledge or understanding of the mechanics of poetry. Unfortunately, this puts them at a disadvantage to other IB students around the world, as poetry is a huge component of the IB World Literature curriculum. It is essential that they read this handbook over the summer in order to ensure they have a solid foundation of knowledge from which to draw when we begin reading, analyzing, and writing about poetry in my class. I want to ensure my students are in the best position to succeed when completing their IB Exams. I believe that receiving this summer reading will allow them to be more successful and more appreciative of the nuances and subtleties of poetry. My students are hardworking and highly motivated, and they deserve to have the same opportunities to succeed as all other students!
