First graders need a variety of different seating options in the classroom so they can move around. When students feel empowered by having some level of choice and control over their environment, they will be more productive. First graders and all young children need opportunities to move! Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand. This will keep them more alert and focused and limit distractions that prevent them from learning. I believe the environment in my classroom will have a direct impact of student achievement. If they are able to make choices and feel they helped create their learning spaces, there will be an increased level of student success!
