I view the largest part of my job is to foster a love of learning. The best way to do that is to get students to read as much as possible. Reading a wide variety of literature often enables the student to find genre and subject matter that appeals to him or her. An easy way to facilitate this process is to build and maintain a large classroom library. This allows students easy access to literature. I do everything I can to motivate students to find books that interest them, to discuss literature, and to become lifelong lovers of the written word. Reading can be empowering! However, students don't always have literature to read that relates to them. This project would provide my students with literature written by African-American authors, about African-American characters. Students want, and need to, identify with characters in books. All it takes is one book, or one author, or one character to keep kids reading for a lifetime.
