The writing lab is a peer-tutoring program facilitated by my school's chapter of National English Honor Society. As the club advisor and an English teacher, I can't help but see the great influence this lab could have on schoolwide literacy. NEHS students volunteer their time to assist other students with English work. They will edit papers, conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions, and are available to help students with any work related to English. Though we have had success launching the writing lab this year, one challenge we've faced is the lack of available technology during tutoring sessions. The majority of our English teachers use Google Classroom, therefore having limited access to technology in the writing lab makes it difficult to assist students. Additionally, the technology used in the writing lab would also be used to publish the school's literary magazine that will showcase student work in the areas of poetry, prose, and visual arts. This is a collaborative project between NEHS and the creative writing elective class. The magazine will serve to highlight and share creative student work with our school and community. My goal through this project is to raise the necessary funding to purchase two desktop computers to increase the relevance and effectiveness of the writing lab next year.
