In August 2017 we officially became a 1:1 (student to technology ratio) school. This means that all of our students, K-12, have access to a device, either I-pad, Chrome Book, or lap top. Being from a low socioeconomic and culturally diverse school, getting the technology was a small step in bridging the digital divide. Many of our students come from households that have little to no technology available. While the first step to becoming digitally literate was important, I believe that we now need to step up and teach our students how to use the technology for creative engagement, rather than just basic knowledge. Adding a Computer Science Discovery class to the middle school curriculum will improve their educational equity. Low income students will be afforded the same opportunities as their middle class counterparts. The invention kits and coding robots will bring their Computer Science Discovery class to life. They will have a chance to experiment with their newfound knowledge, making them more marketable and employable in the workforce.
