I have been working with my students on creating a Ray Bradbury unit. We have focused on the idea of censorship in the media, symbolism, and the continual struggle of nature v. machine. Ray Bradbury's apocalyptic dystopia really captured my students' attention. They really enjoyed reading his novel Fahrenheit 451 as well as a selection of his short stories. I would love to continue growing this unit to make it more relatable to my students. They were able to make the connections between Bradbury's universe and our own. However, I noticed they were hesitant to fully submerge themselves in the idea of his universe since he had written these stories in the 1950s. I believe that having a more modern accompaniment novel that delivers on the same messages will be a great way to keep my students involved and excited in reading and making connections.
