As a teacher in our school library, I strive to provide and maintain a dynamic, personalized learning environment for our students and classroom teachers! I have recently added a new collaborative learning space that will give students the opportunity to engage in 21st century learning skills on a daily basis. The items requested for this project will provide an interdisciplinary approach to learning through the use of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) materials and curriculum; fostering the "four C's of 21st century learning skills": Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Communication. Research supports that implementation of STEM education instills a passion and drive to learn, which is critical in the elementary school years. The new AASL National School Library Standards are designed to transform teaching and learning by encouraging exploration, collaboration, and student engagement . The items requested in this project are designed to do just that! Each kit or building set will provide authentic learning experiences that will challenge students of all ages and abilities to innovate, design, and invent through a collaborative process. The mobile STEM station will provide storage and easy access to materials, as well as the opportunity to adapt the physical learning environment to match the activities. Adding STEM education to our media center will provide an additional layer of student-centered learning that invites divergent thinking and doing, promotes growth mindset, and sets students on the path to life-long learning. By helping to fund this project, you will have a direct impact on our students becoming the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders of today and tomorrow!
