I have a very student-centered, global classroom. We are constantly on the go as we move around the classroom and students are expected to work both independently and in cooperative learning groups throughout the day. I recently read an article by Kayla Delzer that resonated with me. In it she states, "Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them?". Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom and it allows students to change locations and positions within the classroom as needed. By providing my students with a variety of seating options, such as wobble stools, reading chairs, wiggle cushions, balance balls, floor seats and rugs, they will be empowered with choice and some control over their learning environment. I believe this will dramatically improve their focus, engagement and success in the classroom!
