The materials I am requesting for my classroom will go a long way in my Language Arts class. Currently we do not have enough of the same novel to have the whole class read the same book at the same time. Having the whole class read the same novel and work in literature circles each day would promote a sense of community and excitement about reading in the classroom. By working in literature circles, students also get the opportunity to raise questions about the book their are reading, share new ideas, and they also learn how to work as a team. I chose these four novels because they are on a fifth grade reading level and they are also fun and interesting books. In the Lightning Thief I am able to tie in some ancient greek mythology and fables. The One and Only Ivan deals with animal cruelty and is also based on a true story. The Bad Beginning is an interesting book because it is not your typical heart warming story. The book is negative and sarcastic and at times the author even warns the reader to stop reading. If you write a letter to the author, he usually responds within a year so students can have any questions they have about the story answered. I would also like to have my students read the first book in the Harry Potter series because I used to hate reading until I read Harry Potter. I was finally able to see how reading could be an escape. I would also like to redo my classroom into a Harry Potter theme. Starting with the Sorcerer's Stone will help students understand the theme.
