The students at my school represent America in all its promise, potential, and problems. The school reflects the national demographics. The dream of the community remains the same: educate our children for a life of service and success, and empower them to succeed beyond the level we attained. Despite the challenges of educating our youth, the school continues to meet Federal competency goals of yearly progress measures. My students in particular are selected, due to the limitations of building capacity, on the basis of average academic performance vis-a-vis standardized test measures. Rather than seeing these measures as a badge of identity, they continue to outperform national benchmarks. As of last year, twenty-two percent fo my students were selected to the Honors track at the area High School. Their gains in Reading, critical thinking , and writing are demonstrated by their high school/post high school scores on the NWEA measure of academic progress.
