Our team's goal is to have a variety of picture books to read out loud to our students during the year. We want to expose students to a mix of quality fiction and nonfiction books. The purpose is to read stories that connect to our weekly reading theme, seasonal theme, and writing theme. We focused on complimenting the big idea of the week, vocabulary words that are discovered during the week, and incorporating books that will lead into deeper conversation pieces that build on a student's reading comprehension. Being read to every day begins preparing first graders for the skills they will need to be able to read independently. We would like to have one copy per classroom to use from year to year. With four teachers on our team, four books of each are needed. One of our week's reading questions asks "What can we learn as we change and grow?" We selected the book "Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon" because it teaches our students how to help others change for the better and to realize how special you are when you are yourself. It is important to find time to have students listen and enjoy literacy in a world that is constantly busy. If I can engage them by listening to a story every day then hopefully it will instill a love for reading in my students. Books can take us to magical places, and my students can experience this when I'm taking time to read out loud to them.
